I'll be completely upfront about the landscape: Zagora isn't where you go for the massive, towering sand dunes (that’s Merzouga, which requires at least three days of travel). But what Zagora does offer is a rugged, beautiful desert environment, incredible sunsets, and a drive through the iconic Draa Valley—home to millions of lush palm trees. Plus, traveling in a shared minibus (capped at a strict maximum of 17 people) keeps things budget-friendly while still feeling intimate.

Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech to Zagora – Mountains, Kasbahs, and Desert Sunsets
We need to hit the road early, so please be ready by 7:30 AM. Trust me, getting ahead of the Marrakech morning traffic is worth it. You’ll hop into our shared, air-conditioned minibus, and we’ll head straight up into the High Atlas Mountains. The winding roads up to the Tizi N’Tichka pass are seriously photogenic, so we’ll make a few stops to stretch your legs, take photos, and grab some fresh Moroccan mint tea.
By midday, we reach Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. You’ll have free time to explore this ancient, UNESCO-protected fortified village. Actually, I highly recommend hiring a local guide at the entrance (it's only about €3) to really understand the history of this old caravan stop. We’ll grab an hour for lunch here before driving through Ouarzazate and over the Anti-Atlas mountains.
The afternoon drive takes us through the Draa Valley, which is honestly my favorite part of the route, it’s just miles and miles of lush palm trees and ancient kasbahs. By late afternoon, we arrive in the Zagora Desert. Here, you’ll trade the minibus for a camel and ride off into the sunset. We’ll arrive at our traditional Berber camp just before nightfall. Expect a delicious Moroccan dinner, live drum music around the campfire from your nomad hosts, and some of the best stargazing of your life before settling into your cozy private tent.
Day 2: Zagora Desert to Marrakech – Sunrise and the Journey Home
You’re going to want to wake up early today. Watching the sunrise paint the Zagora dunes in shades of pink and gold is something you’ll remember forever. After a traditional breakfast at the camp, we hop back on the camels for a morning ride to meet our driver on the main road.
The journey back traces our route north. We’ll stop in Ouarzazate for lunch at a local café, and if time permits, you can opt to visit the historic Taourirt Kasbah or check out the Atlas Film Studios where they shot movies like Gladiator.
We spend the late afternoon cruising back through the High Atlas Mountains. It’s a great time to just lean back and relax after your desert adventure. We aim to drop you off right at your riad or hotel in Marrakech around 6:00 PM, leaving you with plenty of time for an evening stroll or dinner in the city.
