Detailed Itinerary: 3 Day Desert Tour Marrakech to Merzouga

Day 1 of Your 3 Day Desert Tour Marrakech to Merzouga: Crossing the Atlas Mountains.

Your journey begins at 8:00 AM with a direct departure from your Marrakech accommodation. We ascend the High Atlas Mountains, navigating the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass at an elevation of 2,260 meters. The route includes carefully curated stops to observe traditional Berber architecture integrated into the mountain terracing.

By midday, we reach the Ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its striking earthen clay architecture and historical significance as a former caravan route. Following a midday meal, the journey continues through Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, passing the Taourirt Kasbah.

The afternoon route follows the "Route of a Thousand Kasbahs" through the Skoura Oasis, culminating in the Dades Valley. Here, you will witness the region's imposing geological rock formations before retiring to a premium local guesthouse for an authentic Moroccan dinner and evening rest.

Day 2: Dades Gorges to Merzouga – The Gateway to the Sahara

The morning begins with breakfast overlooking the sheer rock walls of the Dades Valley. The route then advances toward the Sahara, navigating the towering canyons of the Todra Gorges. The expedition continues eastward across the arid landscapes, passing through the traditional agricultural towns of Tinjdad and Erfoud.

Upon reaching the edge of Merzouga, the terrain transitions dramatically into the expansive dunes of Erg Chebbi. Here, the vehicle is exchanged for a guided camel trek into the deep desert. The deliberate pace allows for full immersion in the profound silence of the Sahara during the sunset transition. The day concludes at a private desert camp, featuring authentic regional cuisine, traditional music, and undisturbed views of the night sky.

Day 3: Merzouga to Marrakech – The Draa Valley & Rissani

An early morning observation is highly recommended to experience the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Following a traditional breakfast at the camp, the return expedition to Marrakech commences.

The first destination is Rissani, historically significant for hosting one of the oldest and most authentic commercial markets in the southern region. The journey then proceeds along a different geographical route through the Draa Valley. Recognized as the longest river valley in Morocco, this extensive palm oasis is lined with historic fortified villages and agricultural settlements.

The final leg of the expedition involves significant travel time across the varying landscapes. The logistics are expertly managed to ensure your arrival in Marrakech by early evening, concluding with direct transportation back to your accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for the desert?

Great question. The desert climate is extreme. Pack loose, comfortable clothes for the day, but bring warm layers (a fleece or jacket) for the night. Even in summer, it gets surprisingly chilly once the sun goes down. Don't forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf (cheich) to protect your face from the sand.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Absolutely. Kids usually love the camels and the "fortress-like" Kasbahs. However, the car rides are long (5-7 hours of driving per day broken up by stops). If your little ones struggle with car sickness or sitting still, you might want to look at our slower-paced 4-day option.

When is the best time to book this tour?

The most comfortable weather is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). If you’re traveling during these peak times, or over New Year, I highly recommend booking at least 2 months in advance. The desert camps fill up fast!

Can I charge my phone in the desert camp?

Yes! Most of our camps are equipped with solar power and have outlets in the common areas or even in the tents. However, there is no Wi-Fi in the deep dunes—take it as a sign to disconnect and enjoy the vibe.
