Continue Browsing TripsLet’s be real, you didn’t fly all the way to Morocco just to stay by the pool. You want to see the real Morocco. The one with the red clay castles, the snowy peaks, and the landscapes that look so alien they’ve been used to film everything from Game of Thrones to The Mummy.
This Marrakech to Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou Day Trip is our signature route for history buffs and film fans. It’s a full-day adventure (about 200km each way) that takes you over the soaring High Atlas Mountains and drops you right into the pre-Sahara.
Unlike basic shuttle services, we don’t just drop you off and wave goodbye. This tour includes an experienced local driver to navigate those mountain curves safely and, crucially, a guided walking tour of the UNESCO heritage site at Ait Ben Haddou. You get the history, the culture, and the epic views without the stress of planning it yourself. Whether you’re planning your 2025 bucket list or a last-minute 2026 getaway, this is the day trip everyone talks about when they get home.
We start bright and early to make the most of the daylight. We’ll pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech and head straight for the mountains. The drive toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass is honestly breathtaking. The road winds its way up to over 2,200 meters, and the temperature drops as the views open up. We’ll make plenty of stops at the best vantage points, you’ll want your camera ready for the terraced Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. It’s a long drive, but with the changing scenery (and our comfortable seats), the time flies.
By midday, we arrive at the star of the show: Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This isn't just a movie set; it’s a living piece of history and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you’ll meet your guide for a walking tour through the labyrinthine passageways. They’ll explain the fascinating history of this fortified village (ksar), which used to be a crucial stop for caravans carrying gold and salt across the desert. You’ll see the traditional earthen architecture up close and learn how these structures withstand the elements.
After lunch (there are plenty of great spots with panoramic terraces), we continue to the nearby city of Ouarzazate. You’ll have time to admire the intricate Taourirt Kasbah, a 19th-century palace that shows off the wealth of the Glaoui dynasty. If you’re a film geek like me, you can use this time to visit the Atlas Film Studios (entrance is optional/extra). Seeing the massive Egyptian statues and fake castles in the middle of the desert is a surreal experience you won't forget.
As the afternoon sun starts to dip, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we begin the drive back. We take it easy on the return leg, letting you relax and process the day's sights. We’ll have you back at your hotel in Marrakech by the evening, full of new memories (and probably a little tired in a good way!).
